The City of Friendship

Although, there is no historical records of the first settlers who came to Amity, there are a few men who are known for the development of our community.

In 1849, the settlers were trying to find the perfect spot for a school house.  Two families, Solomon Allen, a pioneer of 1847, and Abraham Garrison, were in dispute of where the school should be built.  Both families wanted the school house to be near their farms.

During that time, it was hard to find teachers because many were preparing to leave to California for the Gold Rush.  Allen and Garrison agreed that they wanted Ahio Watt to be the teacher, however, Watt would not agree on teaching unless both families came to an agreement to one school house.

After much discussion, the families agreed and Ahio Watt became the school house teacher.  He named the school Amity after its meaning “friendship”.

Today, Amity is still known for friendship.  You will be welcomed here with a smile.
